A clear voice amid the constitutional chaos

For the past three years, while the Conservative Party has torn itself apart over Brexit and Labour has dodged, ducked and danced around it, Liberal Democrats have been delivering a clear, consistent message: that Britain's best future is to remain in the EU and that crashing out without a deal would be disastrous for our country.

Now we face Boris Johnson's cynical attempt to shut down Parliamentary democracy while he throws the dice in a reckless No Deal gamble.

The Liberal Democrats are determined to do whatever it takes to resist this anti-democratic proroguing of Parliament.

Party Leader Jo Swinson is at the forefront of cross-party talks aimed at stopping both a disastrous No Deal and the parliamentary suspension. She is proposing a 'triple lock' of legislative measures to prevent it.

Devizes Prospective Parliamentary Candidate, Jo Waltham, has underlined her firm commitment to the democratic processes which define our communities and our nation. 'Boris Johnson was already pushing through No Deal Brexit without a mandate. Now with this decision to suspend Parliament he has created a constitutional crisis. What message does local Conservative MP Claire Perry O'Neil have for her constituents? So far only a passive aggressive dig at Labour on Twitter. Apparently, if their MPs had rolled over and voted for Theresa May's bad deal we wouldn't be in this mess.

Amid the Tory blame games and back-stabbing one thing is absolutely clear. The Government does not have a mandate from the people for a no deal Brexit. It was never presented to voters at the 2016 referendum as a potential consequence of voting Leave. Indeed it was dismissed out of hand by Brexiteers as a ridiculous, fear-mongering suggestion.

'As Liberal Democrats we will continue to lead the Remain cause and to oppose a Boris Johnson No-Deal Brexit,' says Jo Waltham. 'He knows it will cause shortages of food and medicines. Crashing out would cause massive disruption, stalling our economy, affecting businesses large and small, as well as being disastrous for many sectors of the agricultural industry - crucially important in this rural constituency.'
